35.7% fewer people test positive for type B flu during week ending October 17

There were 18 people that tested positive for type B influenza in the United States the week ending Oct. 17, marking a 35.7 percent decrease from the previous week, according to numbers being reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The week ending on October 17 was the 42nd week of 2020. In the 42nd week of 2019, there were 280 people that tested positive for type B influenza in the United States - 1,455.6 percent more than in 2020.

There is an influenza division of the CDC whose responsibility it is to keep track of influenza activity year round. This group compiles and analyzes known cases in order to help states and local governments respond accordingly. The CDC establishes seasonal baselines on what they expect to see in regards to flu & pneumonia related deaths in a given week. For the week ending October 17, the seasonal baseline was 10.9% and the actual rate was 7.6%, meaning the week was below the seasonal baseline. Figures can change and counts can be adjusted as new information is learned from each patient.
