Crowder receives Sutherland Collection

Neosho, MO - The Social Science Division at Crowder College is hosting a speaking event in regards to the Sutherland Collection, a collection of books about the Civil War era donated by Dr. Daniel E. Sutherland, a recently retired history professor at the University of Arkansas and the author or editor of more than fifteen books. The event will take place Thursday, September 8, at 5:30 pm in the Wright Conference Center in the Arnold Farber Building on the Neosho campus. Event flyer

“The Sutherland Collection is the largest, most comprehensive Civil War collection in our area,” stated Dr. Denna Clymer, Social Science Division Chair.

"Hundreds of Little Wars: Community, Conflict, and the Real Civil War in the Ozarks" will be presented by Dr. Matthew M. Stith.  Stith is an associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Tyler where he teaches and writes about military and environmental history. He earned his BA in History at Missouri Southern State University followed by his MA and PhD at the University of Arkansas. Since then he has written or edited four published or forthcoming books that explore elements of the Civil War, Vietnam War, and First World War along with several articles and book chapters. The collection will add to resources in the Lee Library at Crowder College. The college also houses a rare books archive, Herb and Barbara Schade Rare Books Archive, which includes many one-of-a-kind publications.

Additional symposiums focusing on the Civil War will be presented during the 2022-23 academic year as follows:

  • October 13 – Megan Bever, of MSSU.
  • November 3 – Matt Stanley of University of Arkansas
  • March 9 –  Chris Huggard of NWACC
  • April 13 –  Bluegrass Sensation Spillwater Drive
