When Joplin businessman Myron McIntosh donated 20 acres in 1969, it marked the beginning of what would become a significant development in healthcare for the region. A construction drive led by TAMKO executive and Freeman board member Leland Browne raised $1.2 million, leading to the opening of a two-story, 120,000-square-foot hospital with 144 rooms at 1102 W. 32nd Street in 1975.
The institution expanded its reach with the acquisition of Neosho’s Sale Hospital in 1993, which became Freeman Neosho Hospital. Further growth occurred with the merger of Freeman Hospital and Oak Hill Hospital in 1995, forming Freeman East and establishing Freeman Health System.
In reflecting on these achievements, Fry expressed gratitude to all who contributed to this journey: "How have we achieved this remarkable feat? It's simple, yet profound. It's because of you," Fry said. He acknowledged the visionaries who laid the groundwork, colleagues and volunteers past and present, board members, donors, community partners, and especially patients and families: "You are the heartbeat of Freeman Health System."
